Hi John – good question. I did not consult them beforehand, which is why I didn’t use the name of the company. I am a little bit worried, but I think my boss knows my situation, as I think a lot of the people in my department are in the same boat. She knows that I’m planning to go back to school, and the company is even helping to pay for some of my prerequisites. My hope is that they understand that I don’t have any immediate plans to leave, and that I’m grateful for the work right now.

Thank you for the comment speedgraphic. I’d like to clarify that point and say that I am also lucky enough to have saved enough money at my most recent job to be able to survive on what I have for a few months. I’ve gone without a lot of the things that my peers won’t, so that I could save this money. If I got laid-off again, I would find another waitressing or temporary job so that I could pay my rent. I would not have to move back in with my parents. I tried to rely on the government for unemployment the first time I was laid-off, and was denied because I hadn’t been at the job long enough. This is why I’m skeptical that the government can help me, and I try to rely more on myself.
