Benny Goodman began his musical training at
the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue before joining
the Boys Club Band at Jane Addams' Hull
House in 1920. He first studied classical
clarinet under Franz Schoepp, but a greater
influence on his technique came from New
Orleans musicians. Goodman's debut as a
professional musician came in 1921 at the
Central Park Theatre in Chicago. Throughout
his career, he remained one of the most
popular bandleaders, informally crowned the
"King of Swing." In addition to jazz, Goodman
also played classical concerts, and was a star
of radio. He died in 1986.
