Kwaito is the sound of the new South Africa -- an urban "mix masala" of South African music genres and Western house music and hip hop. It has come to define the generation that came of age after apartheid, that essentially inherited that nation's young democracy.
Like hip hop in America, kwaito climbed from the cultural basement into the mainstream, affording young blacks with financial opportunities their parents could never have dreamt of. Today, the pop stars of South Africa are the kwaito stars, influencing the culture, language and economy of the nation in ways that were simply impossible during the traumatic decades of governmentally imposed segregation.
Inside Out's Sean Cole travels to South Africa
to explore kwaito music and the people who make it.
