With so much going on in Boston every weekend, how does the culture lover choose, or even find, the best of what Beantown has to offer? Let Hubbub do some of the sleuthing for you.
There’s a lot to celebrate this weekend: A big day for Dad, a perfect forecast and the final days of spring.
All You Can Eat Father’s Day Barbecue
- Sunday, June 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- The Stanhope Grille, 350 Stuart Street
- Adults, $30; children, $15
Let someone else take care of the grilling, and enjoy as many hot dogs, burgers, red-wine glazed steaks, and pepper/onion/mushroom-smothered Italian sausages and quality time with Dad as you want. They will also be raffling off three pairs of Sox tickets. For the ultimate Father’s Day gift, we suggest buying a handful to up your chances.
The Chocolate Bar at the Langham Hotel
- Saturday, June 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- The Langham Hotel, 250 Franklin Steet
- Adults, $38; children, $25; children under 4, free
- Menu (PDF)
Why take a walking tour of Boston when you can take a much tastier tour? The theme of The Langham Chocolate Bar’s 21st season is “Boston’s Chocolate Trail”, and features sweet-tooth satisfactions like fresh-baked chocolate pizza topped with three types of chocolate and candied citrus (I wonder how that would stack up against a slice from Regina’s) and homemade crackerjacks with dark caramel, peanuts, and sea salt for a nod to Fenway.
All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast
- Sunday, June 20, 9a.m. to 12p.m.
- Charlemont Fairgrounds, Charlemont, MA
- $8
If one all-you-can-eat buffet isn’t enough for you, check out this unlimited buffet of flapjacks.
Boston Derby Dames Roller Derby
- Saturday, June 19
- Shriners Auditorium, 99 Fordham Rd., Willmington
- Adults, $16; children 6-13, $10; children under 6, free
Remember Ellen Page’s enviable tough girl bravado in Whip It? Check out the real thing as the Boston Derby Dames’ “Boston Massacre” team face off against Denver’s squad at 5 p.m. and local teams The Nutcrackers and The Wicked Pissahs at 7. Be prepared to want to throw your life away and join the league.
Summer Solstice Candlelit Walk
- Friday, June 18, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Copicut Woods, Indian Town Road, Fall River
- Free
Enjoy every minute of the longest days of the year with a walk through this breathtaking 3,600-acre bioreserve at dusk. Make a candle lantern with the group beforehand to carry with you and light after the sun (finally) sets at 7:41 p.m.
- Saturday, June 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- City Hall Plaza
- Free
Whether you’re just dreaming of a vacation or actually planning one, check out all the wonders New England has to offer and rack up some coupons for your next getaway. As the website boasts, “If you can visit it, see it, play it, and/or enjoy it in New England, you’ll find it at the See New England Festival.” Sounds like the perfect remedy to a stay-cation.
- Saturday, June 19, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
- Harvard Square
- Free
At last year’s Make Music, 120 bands and solo performers treated Harvard Square to music from virtually every genre, played by professional and amateur local talent. Don’t miss this year’s fest, which was inspired by the free open-air music festival “Fête de la Musique” which started 28 years ago in Paris.
- Friday, June 18, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- The Tapestry Room at The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 280 The Fenway
- Free with museum admission
Friday is the final night of this concert series, played by students of New England Conservatory’s Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP) and featuring music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Pop in for a few songs or stay for the whole hour before taking in the Gardner’s beautiful collection.
- Friday, June 18, at dusk
- The Hatch Shell at The Esplanade
- Free
Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell kick off this Friday with a sing-along showing of “Grease,” so round up your favorite T-Birds and Pink Ladies and get there early to get a front-row seat. Bring a blanket, some popcorn and your best alto or soprano, and enjoy.
- Sunday, June 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Larz Anderson Auto Museum, 15 Newton Street, Brookline
- Adults, $10; children and seniors, $5; children under 6, free
Take Dad to ogle all the old-school BMWs, Porsches, and Volkswagens — it’s way cheaper than buying him one.
The Provincetown International Film Fest
- June 16 to 20
- Provincetown
- $12-$20 for individual events, $250 for all-access pass
If there’s something worth being inside for this weekend, it’s P-town’s International Film Fest, with more than 60 film screenings happening over five days, mixed in with breakfasts, parties, awards ceremonies and of course the prerequisite beachtime. Kevin Smith and Tilda Swinton are both being honored — serious brownie points for anyone who can snap a picture of either one and send it our way.
