As a child of New England, I know my Boston Cream Pie. It was my brother’s #1 favorite birthday cake, and I have sampled the classic cake, as well as the variations: Boston Cream Pie doughnuts, Boston Cream Pie cupcakes and the ill-advised Boston Cream Pie-flavored yogurt.

And now….the newest incarnation: a new Ben & Jerry’s flavor. Inspired by Boston’s favorite titular pastry, B&J is debuting the new flavor in Beantown this Patriot’s Day and, later, across the nation.

Public Radio Kitchen got a sneak-peak at this treat–Boston Cream Pie ice cream, dotted with yellow cake pieces, fudge flakes and a pastry cream swirl. Unsurprisingly, it is both intensely rich and spot-on flavor wise.

The yellow cake flavor is authentic and strong, and arguably, the chocolate could have been better represented by a swirl. The only thing missing was a red cherry underneath the lid. Overall: satisfying and a successful interpretation. This ice cream is reminiscent of the original dessert. It will be a perfect in a cone, on a hot summer day or while strolling after dinner.

You can pick up a pint in grocery stores now or stop by your local Ben & Jerry’s store on Monday, April 19th (Patriot’s Day) for a free scoop. For more information, visit www.benjerry.com.

Great review Sarah! I assume you’re bringing a pint over to me after work, right? I might be willing to trade Watson for some ice cream — especially considering how much he’s been keeping me up at night with his little kitty cat meowing ;)
