Down by the River: Let’s Talk About Food

This week at Public Radio Kitchen we will be dishing out savory samples of the “Let’s Talk About Food Festival” slated for this Saturday, June 25th, river-side at the Museum of Science. What do we mean by this?

To date, expert-filled panels, moderated films, documentaries, live cooking demos and educational visits to the museum by Boston Public School high-school’ers — plus Mayor Menino! and Chef Tony Maws! — have comprised the first-of-its kind, deep-dive initiative being sponsored by the MOS called Let’s Talk About Food.

Ongoing still, “LTAF” was launched last year in Boston as a series of educational programs aimed at increasing the public’s ability (and willingness) to engage in conversations about our food system, in all its iterations– nutrition, agricultural policy, sustainability, food security, food justice, environmental impacts, farm to table, you name it.

Now, those goals will reach their zenith, in a sense, this weekend, when leaders within Boston’s diverse food communities come to together to engage with the public. With you. Spread along the Cambridge-side banks of the Charles, the numerous exhibit booths and cooking demos planned for this free, outdoor, all-day festival are designed to pull the public in. To engage us with thoughtful, direct dialogue about where we get our food from, what we eat each day as individuals, as a nation, and how we prepare our meals.

Lined up to share their knowledge, and to better our own, about the foods we eat are: Chef Charles Draghi of Erbaluce; Christy Hemenway of Gold Star Honeybees; Chef Richard Vellante of Legal Sea Foods; John Lowell of East Dennis Oyster Farm; Chef Frank McClelland of L’Espalier; Franco Carubia of Sel de la Terre; and, Todd Heberlein of Wilson Farm. And that’s just the line-up from 10am-12noon!

The afternoon will usher in Boston Red Sox nutritionist Tara Mardigan, host Shannon Allen of “The Pre-Game Meal,” Gus Rancatore of Toscanini’s, Chefs Jody Adams and Joanne Chang, and many more.

Please read up about the cultural and intellectual forces behind the Let’s Talk About Food Initiative and Festival. But do mark your calendars and come to the banks of the Charles this Saturday, 10-5pm, to eat, listen, watch and tell your own food stories. We’re all in this together, and we’ve got a lot of learn, a lot of share.
