LOCAL TREATS

In the Spirit
Need inspiration for your Holiday shopping? Let Eat Boutique be your muse, with gift ideas, information on their Holiday Local Market (Dec. 10!) and a raft of exciting recipes.

‘Tis the Season
Somerville is gearing up for its second year of the Somerville Winter Farmers Market, Saturdays from 9:30-2:30 at the Center for Arts at the Armory. Keep an eye out for all your favorite vendors from last year, as well as many new ones. If Somerville is too far afield for you, there’s a full list of state-wide markets at DAR’s Massgrown and Fresher site.

Savory Phrases
Join Mayor Menino as he hosts the 3rd annual “Hometown Authors Reception” to benefit ReadBoston on Monday, Dec. 5. The evening will highlight book signings and comments from local authors — cookbook authors and food writers, included — as well as light appetizers and drinks from Island Creek Oyster Bar. Tickets can be ordered here.

Repeal Day
Celebrate the elimination of the 21st Amendment in style as Fenway’s Church restaurant hosts a “Repeal Day Dinner,” Monday, Dec. 5. Indulge on a full meal with drink pairings created by chef Laura Henry Zoubir, a New Hampshire native, and raise the glass to… well… the fact that you can raise your glass! For more information or to RSVP, call 617-236-7600.

Ugly Sweater Party
Don that sweater that’s been hanging in the back of your closet and proudly head to Blue Inc. on Dec. 12 for their night of “Scotch, Cigars, and Ridiculously Ugly Sweaters.” Enjoy a hearty four-course meal, a cigar party favor and a contest to determine the most hideous sweater. Find the full menu and additional information here.

Keeping Warm
As the temperature begins to drop, stay cozy and warm as Bartholamew’s Cobble hosts “Hot Chocolate Saturdays,” beginning Dec. 17. Roam around, enjoy the sites, or simply relax with a hot cup of cocoa and good conversation. Trustees of Reservations has all the info.

NATIONAL BITES

Where’s the Beef?
Performance Food Group and the Kansas-based company IdentiGEN, a leader in meat traceability systems, have made huge strides recently with the introduction of the first commercial system to trace ground beef to its origins using DNA technology. PR Newswire gives a full report on this progressive innovation.

Multitasking
We’ve all been there. You pull a delicious, chilled beverage from the fridge, but your bottle opener is nowhere to be found. For those of you who haven’t quite mastered the “pop the top with a door handle” trick, OpenaCase is just for you: it’s a handy case to protect your iPhone with the added benefit of incorporating a bottle opener. What a world…

GLOBAL TASTINGS

One Small Sip for Man…
We put this under “Global Tastings,” but really it’s in a league of its own. HuffPost Food reported that Natural Light Beer made history this past week as it became the first beer in space. While the beer couldn’t be enjoyed in space, it did go where no beer has gone before.
