Cupcake Camp Grows Up

Whoever said the cupcake fad was dead (or dying) has never been to Cupcake Camp. (Could pies, macaroons or whoopee pies really ever replace the cupcake?)

For the second year in a row Cupcake Camp Boston, described as an “ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and eat cupcakes in an open environment,” brought together dozens of bakers and cupcake lovers in one place.

Not only did people wait up to 45 minutes in the cold rain to get in the door, but numerous amateur bakers and food bloggers had spent hours toiling away in their home kitchens measuring, sifting, mixing, baking, frosting and decorating cupcakes to be eaten by strangers. For free.

There is no doubt the event grew up in the year since its first incarnation at P.A.’s Lounge last spring. Continue reading

Did you hear PRK’s first ever on-air segment today?!! Here’s our related, original post on Sarah Kleinman of Boston Eats.

Mmmmmilkshakes
I scooped ice cream part-time all through high school. My co-workers and I created some pretty weird combos during the slower hours, but we NEVER whipped up anything that could compete with the milkshake concoctions in Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes, Adam Reid’s new book. Continue reading

Picnic Fare

It’s spring, which means that table outside is hot, as in hot real estate. Instead of facing the crowds and the wait at your favorite eaterie, why not grab a picnic basket and head to your nearest green space. Saveur is featuring Ultimate Picnic Fare that looks tantalizing. My favorites are the Crab-Potato Salad and Artichoke Tea Sandwiches, but you’ll also need something to keep you cool if May keeps handing us 80 degree days! Here’s a unique take on a classic, Watermelon Peppermint Iced Tea from Healthy and Gourmet.

Planning on picnicking for Mother’s Day? Share with us your favorite picnic food and your favorite green space!

Time to Make the Donuts
To celebrate their 60th year of donut making, Dunkin Donuts asked their customers to design their newest sweet treat. Over 90,000 creations were submitted and widdled down to 12 finalists, three of which are from Massachusetts! “Monkey-see Monkey donut,” “Snack-o-Lantern,” and “S’morgasbord”… Continue reading

Aw Shucks
The North End Fish Market, Mercato del Mare, hosts oyster shucking lessons every Saturday afternoon, 1-3pm. The lessons themselves are free: only cost to you is what you shuck and eat. Boston.com has dubbed this event one of the city’s best cheap, creative dates, but heed their warning–make sure s/he isn’t allergic to shellfish before you head out! (See related food for thought in yesterday’s post, below, and Anastacia Marx de Salcedo’s guest post on kitchen knives.)

Put some Vino in your Voyage
Gordon’s Fine Wines and Liquors is hosting a VinoVoyage on May 13th. Take the Spirit of Boston, add more than 250 wines for the tasting, a buffet dinner, DJ, live jazz and…bon voyage! Continue reading

Kale Chips

Since I started interning at PRK, I have become a big fan of the health food bloggers. They always innovate, and this inspires me to branch out in the kitchen, especially when it comes to how I eat my veggies. A while back I noticed that Tina of Carrots ‘n’ Cake would not stop raving about kale chips. I had never had kale before, but I was pretty damn sure no leafy green could ever make a good substitute for potato chips.

Despite my initial stance against the idea, Tina’s recipe kept following me around, haunting me. Kinda scary. I knew kale was good for you, but still I was skeptical. Eventually, after reading the Siren calls on other blogs (KERF, Always Order Dessert, more CnC), I caved. ENOUGH! I’ll try them. Continue reading
